Overview
Template-level weighting lets you determine how much each section of a performance review contributes to the employee's overall score. This article walks you through how to add and configure weights when building or editing a review template.
Before You Begin
- Who can do this: Admins and Focused Admins with access to Reviews
- Where to find it: Admin Settings > Reviews > Templates
- Applies to: Performance Review templates only (not 1-on-1s or Feedback)
A guided walkthrough:
Step 1: Create or Open a Review Template
-
Go to Admin Settings and navigate to Reviews > Templates.
-
Click Create Template to start a new one, or Edit* to update a current template.
-
In the template builder, locate the Weighting setting on the right and change it to Enabled.
Step 2: Build Your Template
Once your settings are enabled, create your template by adding questions. [LINK]
✅ Important: In order to be eligible to be weighted, a question must be:
- Required AND
- Included in overall score
Questions that cannot be weighted include: open-ended, multichoice, legacy competencies, bullet point, agenda builder, goal review and feedback review.
📌 Note: Weighting can only be enabled at the template level.
Step 3: Assign Weights to Each Section
Enter a percentage weight for each section you want to include in the overall score. You can weight any combination of the following:
- Performance Goal section
- Org-wide Competency section
- Role-based Competency section
- Individual scaled questions
Users will always see information about how a score is calculated once the Review is shared. You can configure who has visibility into the weighted scores in the ‘who can see question weights..’ section.
✅ Important: All weights must add up to 100% by column. The template will flag a red error if the total is over or under 100% and you will be unable to save.
Step 4: Save the Template
Once your weights add up to 100%, click Save to apply your changes. The weighting will take effect for any review cycle that uses this template going forward.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I add weighting to an existing, active review cycle?
Weighting is set at the template level, so changes to a template will apply to future review cycles. We recommend confirming whether your changes will affect any in-progress cycles before saving since changes will apply immediately.
What happens if I don't add weights?
Sections without weights will not contribute to an overall score calculation. Leaving weighting off altogether is a valid option if you prefer unweighted reviews.
Can I weight individual goals or competencies within a section?
At this time, weighting applies to each section of questions as a whole.
